GN-80 GPS Receiver:

Miniature high-performance GPS receivers have been greatly expanding the application field for GPS receivers in the last few years. Leading the way in this world trend, Furuno has developed a new all-purpose GPS receiver, model GN-80, with greatly improved performance characteristics and incredibly low power consumption.

Higher sensitivity and faster TTFF has been realized thanks to newly developed signal processing technology and high-speed search engines integrated into each of the GN-80's 16 channels.

This new GPS receiver, Furuno's 5th generation since 1992, will surely provide users with optimum solutions in various applications.

High-Speed Search Engines:

In order to track satellite signals, the receiver has to acquire the C/A code first. In our previous conventional models, the receiver tries to find the accordance of the code between signals from satellites and output from an internal single co-relater, by shifting the phase channel by channel. In the GN-80, however, a series of the C/A codes with a small amount of shifted phase are initially prepared in the receiver. This way, the more co-relaters the receiver has, the faster it can acquire the satellite signals. We term this approach a high-speed search engine. Actually, by having 16 co-relaters in each of the 16 channels, the speed of acquiring satellite signals has been improved dramatically, resulting in our very rapid TTFF in cold start.

High Sensitivity:

Sensitivity is basically a struggle against noise. In order to retrieve the signal out of the noise, a new way of noise measurement and signal addition algorithm has been introduced. For example, by measuring the noise in real time and by processing the real time information, the tracking sensitivity has been significantly improved. A new filter control technology enables a wider range of signal tracking as well.

Miniaturization/Low Power Consumption::

High-speed search engines and/or addition of the WAAS-ready function usually means inevitable larger digital circuitry. However, our newly developed digital ASIC with new logic has successfully suppressed the current increase and has been placed into a smaller TQFP package. This produces well-balanced high performance/various functions while much lower power consumption. Furthermore, this digital ASIC can integrate a flash ROM which contains user application programs. This helps users to develop their own custom-made products in a relatively shorter period of time.
